Rohilkhand is a region in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It’s located in the upper Ganges Plain, and is centered around the cities of Bareilly and Moradabad.

History

The region was called Madhyadesh and Panchala in the Sanskrit epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. It was settled by early Aryans and ruled by Hindu kings before becoming part of the Muslim rulers of Delhi. The ancient name for Rohilkhand was Katehir.
The name Rohilkhand was given to the region in the middle of the 18th century when it came under the control of the Rohilla Dynasty.

Geography

The region is bordered by the Ganges Doab to the south and west, Uttarakhand to the north, Nepal to the east, and the Awadh region to the southeast. It includes the cities of Amroha, Bijnore, Budaun, Khutar, Moradabad, Najibabad, Pilibhit, Rampur, Bahjoi, Kakrala, and Shahjahanpur.

Notable features

The Rohilkhand region is known for its turbulence and rebelliousness. The majority of Rohillas migrated from Pashtunistan to North India between the 17th and 18th century.
